Crochet Hippo Amigurumi Pattern
Hady, the crochet hippo amigurumi, is adorable and what’s different is that she is actually wearing a bikini suit! Have you ever seen a hippo in a bikini? Oh my, that is such a cute sight! Meet Hady, the pink Amigurumi Hippo, who is all fresh and chirpy as she makes her entry into the Craft Passion library. This Hippo Amigurumi Pattern is the second animal of Craft Passion's latest Animal & Wildlife Amigurumi series after Leon, the Amigurumi Lion.
Now Leon won’t be so lonely anymore. If you have tried Leon, MooMoo, or Aile, you will find many similarities between them, which will make this Amigurumi Hippo crochet pattern an easy one to do.
Hady, the crochet Hippo stuffed animal stands at about 11.5” and when sitting, is about 9” tall. Crocheted from DK lightweight acrylic yarn, I used a 2.5mm hook to make her in this ideal huggable size.
She makes a really good huggable stuffed hippo toy, so making her for children as a gift is a great idea. This hippo amigurumi design is quite flexible too, a different type of yarn will give you a hippo soft toy in a slightly different size.
You will end up making a bigger hippo crochet animal with a heavier yarn (e.g medium yarn with a 3.0mm hook) or a smaller hippo by using lighter baby yarn (with a 2.0mm hook). Crochet tension will also affect its size; my tension is quite snug so my amigurumi hippo may be slightly smaller than yours.
She woke up early to a beautiful day with blue skies and scattered with cotton-wool clouds. “Yippeee,” she squealed. “Today, I can pack up a picnic and laze in the sun. What a gorgeous day.”
And so she dressed in her favorite lime green bikini and trotted happily out the door to the beach with her sun hat and straw tote.
She hummed a happy song as she went along the short little path, occasionally stopping to smell the fresh sea breeze. “How lucky I am to live so near to the beach,” the crochet hippo amigurumi thought to herself. “A quick cool dip is only 10 minutes away.”
Within minutes, she reached the welcoming sandy seaside. Joyfully she spread out her beach mat and sat down with her book. She was contentedly reading when a shadow fell across her book. Looking up, she saw Sill the Amigurumi Sloth smiling down at her.
“May I join you?” Sill asked. “But of course!” Hady replied joyfully. “This will be even more fun now.” And that was how they both spent the rest of the beautiful, sunny weekend.

More Details on how to crochet & assemble the Hippo Amigurumi
- Crochet parts for Amigurumi Hippo and stuff them according to the crochet pattern: Body, Head, Ears, Teeth, Arms, Legs, and Tail.
- Sew Eyes and Ears:
Sew eyes at round 24, 18 stitches apart.
Do not cut the yarn after sewing the first eye, instead, insert it into the head and come out from the second eye to sew another eye.
Pull the yarn a little to sink the eyes into the head, knot securely. You can run the yarn through the head a few times to prevent the yarn from snapping in the long run.
Sew the ears to the head, about 8 rounds at the back of the eyes.
Side view of the head after eyes and ears are sewed on. - Sew Teeth and Lip line:
Sew teeth at 3 rows below the center.
Loop a yarn across the snout at the level above the teeth, after that entwine it with stem stitches. - Sew nostrils with 4 strands of yarn, at Round 10, 18 stitches apart.
- Sew Head to the Body:
Position the head and the body with the head slightly tilted to the front. Mark the position and pin to secure it if necessary.
Join the head to the body by sewing a straight join between them. - Sew Arms and Legs:
Sew arms at the side, next to the seam of the head and body.
Followed by sewing legs at round 15 (from the bottom) of the body. - Lastly, sew the tail to the back of the body.

Do the teeth stick out a little or did you sew all four sides on?
They are sticking out, just need to sew the top and secure the teeth by making another stitch or 2 behind the tooth.
Can you help my with the bikini top please? I understand the directions but it doesn’t seem to be coming out right.

I had the same problem too. the triangles in the bikini top doesn’t look like the photo when you do it and it’s confusing bc it says to do 10 sc but end using only 4 sc in them with the sts2tog 2c sts2tog. I don’t know if you can understan me, sorry for my bad english but I hope you can fix it.

You are right on the ch, it means "ch 1" when the instruction states "ch".
