Treats Holder Sewing Pattern

I sewed this Treats Holder to serve little treats during Chinese New Year. Every kid visited my house during this festive season likes it… I mean the treat!!! I made another bigger one to put some mandarin oranges as well. To my surprise, it can also be a King’s crown if the fold is made deeper.

Today is the 7th days of Chinese New Year!!!! It is everybody’s birthday and we are officially 1 year older in our lunar age. Traditionally, we get together on this day to toss the colorful raw fish salad(yee sang, 鱼生) and make wishes for continued wealth and prosperity. The higher we toss, the better we will get 🙂

I saw this method quite sometimes ago and amazed at how the holder was transformed from, it was a “cross” originally!!!

Treats Holder Sewing Pattern

Cut 8 pieces of 5 x 16.5cm (2″ x 6 1/2″) to make a small treats holder of 5 x 5cm (2″ x 2″).
Bigger Treat holder 14 x 14cm (5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″) needs 8 pieces of 10 x 32cm (4″ x 12 1/2″).
You can use 2 or 4 different colors of fabric for your design.
Arrange the fabrics in a “cross” as shown in the photo, you need 2 sets of this to complete a treats holder. Arrange the second set at the bottom of this set with the wrong side facing each other.

Pick up a pair of the fabrics and sew with 5mm (1/4″) seam allowance. You will have 4 pair of this. With 2 pair of the right side facing top and 2 pair of the wrong side facing top.

Bring the top pairs and arrange in this way, sew it. Do the same to the other 2 pairs.

>Iron the seam to set the crease for the “cross”. Place them on top of each other with right side facing.

Sew along the perimeter of the “cross” but leave an opening (marked with *) of 3cm (1 1/4″) for turning the “cross” inside out.
Clip all corners.

Turn the “cross” inside out and sew the opening with the whip stitches. Iron the “cross”

Fold the arms of the “cross” as shown. Secure with pins.

Whipstitch along the outer edge of the seam line.
Make stitches at the inner layers as shown.

Complete all 4 arms and fold the top edge down and it is ready to fill up with treats.
Well, you can also choose not to fold the edge down to present another style of this holder.
